Do you enjoy hiking through lush rainforests, or walking adjacent to the ocean where kayaks explore and seals and shorebirds are common?  This is our paradise living on <strong>Vancouver Island<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sandysglobaleyes.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/83b83a0e-c7c4-4e50-aa5b-322e0fd54b7f-collage.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5247\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Vancouver Island, British Columbia<\/strong> is a unique island paradise off the west coast of <strong>Canada<\/strong>. The &#8220;<strong>Island<\/strong>&#8221; is 460&nbsp;<strong>kilometres<\/strong>&nbsp;(290&nbsp;<strong>miles<\/strong>) in&nbsp;<strong>length<\/strong>, 80+&nbsp;<strong>kilometres<\/strong>&nbsp;(50+&nbsp;<strong>miles<\/strong>) in width at the widest point, and 32,134 km2 (12,407 square&nbsp;<strong>miles<\/strong>) in area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Vancouver Island<\/strong> is roughly the same <strong>size<\/strong> as Belgium (30,688 km\u00b2)or Taiwan (36,193 km\u00b2), and much bigger than Israel (20,770 km\u00b2), Kuwait (17,818km\u00b2) and Jamaica (10,991 km\u00b2). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sandysglobaleyes.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/0c65ab84-c767-4fcd-a91c-cdc240573b40-collage.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5249\" \/><figcaption>January hike to Pipers Lagoon, Nanaimo <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of our forest areas are rainforest; however, our coastal climate is much more temperate than most of the rest of Canada. This blog post represents some of the beautiful outdoor locations around our home in Nanaimo. Keep in mind, all these adventures occurred during January&#8211;Winter in Canada. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sandysglobaleyes.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/cbd7f093-f3f8-4e68-a52c-d3018c4abd06-collage.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5251\" \/><figcaption>Winter time enthusiasts\u2014Kayakers and a person paddling on a SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard).  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My husband and I love hiking, kayaking, exploring nature, skiing, and so forth. My son does not always share our adventurous ways. Sophia (our rescue kitten) has mixed feelings about outdoor adventures. She is incredibly curious, but likes the comforts of home too. Sophia loves to burrow and sometimes surprises us by hiding under blankets, rugs, cloth, coats, pillows, etc.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sandysglobaleyes.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/e6254956-c1dc-4502-9802-24759c89c0df-collage.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5256\" \/><figcaption>Sophia (rescue kitten) aged 7 months <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another January day, another opportunity to explore beaches and beautiful decorated clouds adorning the blue skies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sandysglobaleyes.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/bbe8a735-219f-4b43-bf47-140622d3b0a7-collage.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5259\" \/><figcaption>January beach walk <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nature offers beauty everywhere and there is lots of physical space to explore&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sandysglobaleyes.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/3f0383a8-07ea-4906-a2eb-56857de94974-collage.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5263\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are dozens and dozens of trails to hike and explore around our home. This short video represents a hike through one of our rainforest trails in winter.
